Why we need to operationalise coaching

Dominic Ashley-Timms and Laura Ashley-Timms argue that traditional coaching methods fail to boost employee engagement and productivity because managers struggle to separate their coaching role from their managerial duties. Despite significant investment, only 10% of UK employees feel engaged.

They propose “Operational Coaching®” using the STAR® model, where managers integrate coaching behaviors into daily interactions, improving team performance and workplace culture. A study by LSE showed this approach increases coaching time by 70% and enhances manager capabilities, leading to higher employee retention and engagement.
