Scientifically Proven To Transform Managers' Performance Within 6-Months

After a decade of working with organisations across all sectors, Operational Coaching® and Notion’s STAR® model came to the attention of the UK Government as a potential “advancement in the science and practice of management” that could “positively affect productivity”.

Notion was awarded Innovate UK funding by the Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for an extended academic research project to assess the measurable impact of their award-winning, blended management development programme STAR® Manager.

The groundbreaking trial, the largest of its kind in the world, included 62 organisations across 14 sectors, and the results were independently analysed and evaluated by the London School of Economics (LSE).

Watch this 10-minute video for an overview by Laura Ashley-Timms of the academic study and the results achieved across 62 organisations in just 6-months

The Background

In 2019, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) published their Business Productivity Review which highlighted the widening gap between UK Productivity levels and those of the G7. Attention was also drawn to the fact that “UK firms compare particularly unfavourably internationally on people management, which is the factor most correlated to productivity”.

In the same year, the CBI outlined in their report “Great job – Solving the productivity puzzle through the power of people”, 7 habits that would build upon and improve management capability, which included:

  • Putting people objectives on a par with commercial objectives
  • Managers providing regular appreciative and strengths-based feedback
  • Coaching – ‘on-the-job’ development and support

They calculated that only a 7% improvement in management performance could unlock up to £110bn of untapped potential for the UK economy.

To explore ways to unlock this productivity improvement the Business Basics Fund was created by the UK Government.

The Purpose of the Business Basics Programme

Of the 189 research proposals received, only 6 were selected for the fund, and Notion’s was the only study of the six looking into the practice of management.

Who was involved in the Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT)

Over 200 organisations applied to take part in the study. 62 organisations were selected from across 14 sectors to create a ‘properly powered robust population’.
Once the study was completed the organisations in the control group were also allowed to complete the programme
All ages and levels of leadership and management were represented and there was a balanced gender and ethnicity mix as well.

The study was based on this research question and powered at the learner level

Each learner had access to the full STAR® Manager programme – a multi-award-winning innovative, experiential virtual blended learning programme designed to change managers’ behaviour so that they can use more of a coaching style of management in the flow of work.

The programme was also supported with optional live tutor-led events and Notion’s Mission Control team

The Intervention Group had access to STAR® Manager and the measurements in the study were captured after just 6-months.

The Control group had no access and were kept engaged with some light communications and the knowledge that after the study they would also have the option to complete the programme.

Due to the natural design of data capture within the programme LSE were able to achieved a 100% data set which they never been achieved before.

At the start of the study, the Intervention Group and Control Group were spending the same time in each of the Four Domains of Leadership. They were spending the least amount of time Coaching and the most amount of time DOING. Often stepping down to take on additional tasks from their team’s stack.

6-months later, the results looked very different.

UK government declared the results “robust”.

Operational Coaching® “a universal skill set”

STAR® Manager is for every manager, at every level, within every organisation, in every sector.

As a result of this study, Notion were invited by the UK Government to consider ways to make the results and the programme more widely available and visible.

To help meet this challenge a number of initiatives have taken place which include:
